Elsinore Concert

Everyone's always telling me that "the only way to get better at writing is to read," but really...why not just write? So here I am at 11:30 trying to create a blog while my endless stack of homework seems to be growing by the minute.

The Elsinore Choir/Holiday Concert was today. The Camerata played the Mahler Adagietto and the Grave and Overture to Handel's Messiah. I didn't expect to have any new experiences because of my previous performance at the Elsinore last year, but it was quite refreshing. I could tell that everyone was nervous to play the Mahler that that had barely been thrown together with the harp about two days ago without ever having a "perfect" rehearsal. It was one of those surprises a week before the concert, "Oh, so we're really playing the Mahler tomorrow??" Yeah. So as I was lamenting my earlier failures to practice during the Mahler, I looked up at the orchestra, and everyone had a sense of urgency and intensity in their faces. All of the goofing off and inside jokes put aside. The power of a common goal in a group as intelligent as this is amazing. I suddenly felt renewed and more comfortable. The piece became new and refreshing for me again, and I had the time of my life on stage today. Every melody and phrase played from the heart.

All in all. This is why I am in orchestra.
